We have a bilingual household and my three year old is in a Spanish emersion household. His Spanish is really good and we would like for him to continue to grow with his Spanish, but he lotteried into a school we really like that is English-only. My spouse (the Spanish speaker in the household) is not actually fluent and my Spanish is very limited, so we are considering hiring a caregiver to spend time with our son a few days a week after school or on the weekend to help keep Spanish going- ideally someone with an early childhood education background so he can be learning through play, and of course just the extra set of hands a few days a week would be helpful. Has anyone done this? Thoughts on where to look and what an appropriate rate would be? We would really want a long-term relationship for both of our kids (we have a younger child as well). I'm considering approaching one of his daycare teachers to see if she would be interested. |
I would the Argentine school for classes or Arcos Iris Somos if you’re in Maryland. It helps to have a whole community of Spanish speakers rather than just the one on one you’re envisioning. |
Yes - definitely need that if you want to continue the Spanish. I'd sayd nanny hourly rate, maybe more. |
You could and should try to keep as many native speakers around on a daily basis as possible. Be forewarned that we found that once our kids were in school full time they would only speak English. They developed passive bilingualism, where they understand, but due to the ease of speaking and thinking in English (which became the dominant language once in school), our kids would not respond in Spanish.
Still to this day their conversational/little kid spanish is amazing. But an in-depth conversation using expanded vocabulary and expanded verb tenses is very limited. Good luck on the endeavor. |
My family has spent a small fortune getting our DC's fluent: spanish speaking nannys, yearly study abroad, Escuela Argentina; and DC's are probably only 80% fluent. If you are not 110% committed to bilingualism, i would just forget it and have them pick up a sport. |
