I have a DS in K at a good DCPS elementary. I've been thrilled with his progress reading this year. But the math that I'm seeing come home on worksheets is so low-level. It's so basic that he's just not interested in it. Does anyone supplement the DCPS K/1st curriculum on this front? If so, what do you use? (FWIW, my goal is just for him to be interested and to naturally progress through that curiosity. I'm not trying to "push" anything or create an Einstein, but he just seems so bored by what he's getting in math from school.) |
You can do Zearn or Prodigy, there's a free version.
Be aware that review to develop fluency and speed is very important. The work that goes home is usually review, they're not going to introduce new concepts via homework. You can ask the teacher if it's ok to just do every other problem. But in general, your kid does need to develop speed and fluency with math facts even if it is boring, because that's what sets them up for success in the next units and years of math. Complaints of boredom do not indicate mastery, you need to sit with him to see if he really has mastered it. |
Beast Academy--you would have to work with him and it's more for 1st graders and pretty advanced, so go slow and see if he likes it. Or you could sign him up for Russian School of Math or Kumon |
My mathy kids liked Beast Academy and Prodigy at that age, and also played games (many of which involved mathy thinking, like patterns and probability).
Eventually, his iReady scores were high enough that the school started giving him more appropriately challenging work during class, and he's happier. |
Beast all the way! |
Be prepared that math does not progress much from K-2 and it's slow even beyond that. |
I didn't, but after we moved to an international school that the DCPS curriculum is slow compared to school now. |
I have kids that are good-to-great at math. K, in DCPS, I think is basically fine for all, if slow/boring for the kids that already get it. 1st grade is basically a waste for everyone who is not pretty bad at math (or coming from a non-school environment). It is a huge waste for any kids that are actually good at math. |
the rubber only meets the road in middle school. By then it's too late for many |
What’s the average cost of 30 min or 60 min math tutoring? |
