| Is a ranking 10 positions higher worth giving up a $100K merit scholarship (over four years)? We can afford full pay. Both schools are good for the major and both well known. |
| I'd probably take the merit money. 10 ranks is really not much. |
|
If you can afford it and wont affect your lifestyle is this even a question? Let your kid decide.
If that money is important, then like PP said, big a bid deal. |
and rankings change a lot (other than HYPSM) |
| Just tell us the names of the schools.... |
| For what it’s worth, I convinced my kid to give up ucla (OOS so $60k+ per year) for $140,000 merit over four years elsewhere , at a much smaller school that I thought was better for him Just to say that I thought in excess of $100k was real money but also there can be other factors that go into the decision. |

Harvard vs JHU? Harvard is worth 100k
Whatever is ranked 60 vs 70? Then no, not worth it |
| Goodness no. Please don't take rank so literally. Look at the actual school. Also ranking is so fake that it changes a lot from year to year. You should fully disregard rank. |
Harvard vs full ride somewhere? Is Harvard worth 400k? |
| Harvard won't be 400k for most people. But for those who are on the hook for full fare (like us!), yeah, probably. |
| Absolutely not worth it. Take the full ride. And if it’s merit based, your kid will be a star at that school and get lots of extra perks and access. |
| Rankings are dumb and you're talking about a negligible difference even if you do think they're worthwhile. I'd definitely take the merit money. |

Princeton vs Cornell
Univ of Chicago vs Carnegie Mellon BC vs Purdue Michigan State vs Syracuse SUNY Buffalo vs Marquette Those schools are all 10 points apart in ranking, and I don't think it is worth $100K more for the higher ranked one in any of those cases. |
| We gave up 120k (and a few others of lesser total value) because we told DC we were full pay all the way and they could pick whatever they wanted. And we kept that promise. |
| We'd let kid choose which s/he felt was the better fit. |
