Bucknell vs Colgate ?

Anonymous
my DC has been accepted at both, and is waffling back and forth lol - I almost feel it’s a coin flip at this point! Hoping the Bucknell booster and the critic stay on the sideline for this thread, the pipeline to street advocacy/mocking has become tiresome to those who have kids with a genuine interest in the school. For any of you familiar with both schools, what would students say are the strengths and weaknesses of both? Econ major, who likes to socialize and is sporty

I have a DD at Bucknell, but we looked at both. Bucknell is about 700 students larger - really a great size for a LAC. From what we hear from friends of DD who go to Colgate, it's a nice place, and very cold. Colgate probably considered the "better school" if you look at USNWR etc. (I say as someone who sends their kid to BN), but the pros of Bucknell also counter-balance some of the perceived prestige. Both are heavily greek and sporty - my DD is an athlete. I agree probably a coin toss on a lot of issues, but those chasing prestige will likely say Colgate.

^Agree pretty similar both in Patriot League.

I agree with the coin toss. I didn't know Bucknell was that much bigger. I agree with PP that that's a nice size. Both great schools, very good in econ.

Colgate’s town is really small & there isn’t much within a short drive. Bucknell doesn’t feel as isolated.

Prestige wise slight advantage to Colgate
Both very remote and cold

I know Colgate a bit better than Bucknell but I know kids at both schools and they love their schools. I agree that they are both similar sporty/greek/play hard but serious academics schools. More similar than different. From a straigh Econ perspective Colgates Econ department is quite a bit more active and better thought of from a RePec perspective; they publish quite a bit more and are cited more often but both are excellent programs.

I would pick based on fit.

You can't go wrong with either school as a sporty kid majoring in econ. Doors on The Street will be wide open for you either way. I prefer Bucknell because it's a little larger and it's location isn't quite as cold or remote.

With respect to your daughter's intended major, this analysis, which is based on faculty scholarship in economics, may offer a basis on which to compare these schools academically:

Has to laugh at that post! I went to Colgate and I swear everyone I knew there had applied and not gotten into Dartmouth.

Go with better location. Both crappy. one the place just is and the other gets fking cold (well PA does too but....).

Did you say where you are? Proximity to home could be another factor.
