new england - beach or lake, plus biking

Anonymous
I’m looking for a place for a family trip this summer, on water (can be ocean, bay, lake- anything swimmable), with good nearby road biking options as my family (parents and older teens) loves to take long bike rides along the paved trails in VA and DC. Bonus for a cute town with a good market, restaurant, bookstore. It seems that Maine, Mass, VT would abound with places like this but I am not familiar enough to know where to start looking. We’ll probably go in early to mid June. I’d appreciate any suggestions.

There are only a couple of long rail trails like the W&OD or C&O in New England, and they are up in northern VT and NH. There’s a nice 20-miler on the Cape that goes from Dennis to Wellfleet, but it’s going to be hard to find a place to stay in that area this late in the game.

Upstate NY has an extensive trail network and it might be easier to find lodging there.
