Abbott Elementary Controversy - Did they go too far with Mr. Johnson?

Anonymous
spoilers below if you haven’t see the last episode

In the latest episode, the wonderfully talented Jill Scott guest starred as herself in a storyline about raising money for Abbott after a failed car wash.

SPOILER ALERT

At the end of the episode, we learn Mr Johnson has been stalking Jill for at least a year, stole clothing and items from her, created a shrine for her, and caused her to require round the clock security.

Based on Reddit comments, viewers seem divided. Many are disappointed that the show would write such a dark and creepy storyline for everyone’s fave janitor. Others say, it’s just a wacky sitcom, get a grip!

What are your thoughts? Can Mr Johnson be redeemed? Does he even need to be?

It’s a sitcom.

Google suspended disbelief.

Yeah I wish they hadn't written that in. Creepy and out of character.

Isn't part of the character that no one really knows anything about his life, and they keep bringing up these unexpected things?

Yeah that's a bit much for the show. This isn't It’s Always Sunny, it doesn't match the tone.

That was my thought, too. I haven’t seen the episode but I did see the Christmas episode. In that one, the janitor dressed as Santa and dropped off presents to staff members at home, and when he left each scene said he was headed to “The North Pole.” It turned out to be a strip club.

Isn't he a conspiracy theorist? I feel like they're always closet freaks, so it's really not that out of character for an old man who blames the illuminati for the world's ills to also be a stalker.

Side note, my favorite Mr. Johnson moment is when he yells at Janine for messing up his "system" on the breaker and it's really just each button is labeled after a Boyz II Men song.

I haven't seen it yet but your description reminds me of Glee with Sue and the Hurt Locker.

How do you fell about AVA being back as head principal? I wanted her to stay in the show, but Mr. Eddie was a way better principal.

Have Ava do an education degree and get her back in the classroom for real. The show needs storylines outside of just the main gang. She can meet student teachers as an “elder” like Nolan in The Rookie. Could be hilarious and heartwarming. Her new boyfriend mr perfect is boring sorry.

Controversy is a bit overstated
