Dog is insanely sensitive to haircuts?

Anonymous
I have a 1 year old Pekingese we gave a summer clip to for the first time. The dog is extremely itchy and rocking up and back due to discomfort post haircut. It’s so bad we had to get him gabapentin to calm him down as he was mutilating his own skin by scratching it so hard he was bleeding. He was also not sleeping and screaming under a chair for hours. The vet said besides where he scratched himself she saw no skin issues and this is unusual. Anyone else have a pet like this? Do we just never clip him again?

They usually spray them with something meant to "detangle" or "condition" the fur before brushing them out prior to trimming. Then, did the groomer also spray him with something scented? They often do that at the end of the process. My ragdoll cat HATES being sprayed with sweetpea "pet cologne", or whatever it is, and had a similar reaction. I always have to stress to groomers that she CANNOT be sprayed with anything at all. We had one groomer refuse to work with her because of this.
