| Next year my DS will be a 6th grader, and they are no longer have daycare for him, If everything stay the same he will be home for about 2-3 hours starting in August. If he stop attending daycare after Spring Break, he will be home for an hour or so... He is mature enough him to not open the door or talk to anyone will it be okay?? Did anyone have an 11 year old that stayed home for an hour after school? |
| I’m going to assume English is not your first language but in the US daycare is for babies. |
| My 10yo 4th grader has been staying home for up to an hour on her own after school a few times a week this school year. She has an Apple Watch so we can track her and she can reach us. You want to go over a safety plan with him and he should have some way of contacting you. |
| Yes this is fine. |
| I was babysitting at age 10, so, if you have a safety plan, I think he'll be fine. |
| DC about the same age started to be home alone, since I had to take younger one to sports before DH gets home from work. I arm the home security system and DC has a cell phone for emergency. |
| Will he be allowed to use the oven? Microwave? Stove? Use screens unsupervised? |

Most people start leaving kids as young as 9 years old at home during the day for short stretches. Not only is this okay you should do this for the kid to have a growing sense of independence, confidence, and responsibility.
I have an 11 year old who is home all the time alone during the day. It's fine. Yes cover the basics of don't answer the door, here's what you do in an emergency. |
| Yes she will be fine |
It's a boy. |
| I am curious how do you ensure that kid does not lose house key? I am concerned my house key is lost. |
| They will be fine! Leave a back up key in a hidden spot or with a neighbor. |
We enter a 4 digital code so he can enter it, when he there and he knows how to use it. |
We have a keypad but I tied our house key inside a pocket of my daughter's backpack in case the keypad doesn't work (which has never happened). |
| We leave a spare key with a neighbor and would just make a new one if he lost it. Its also on a very large bulky key chain. |
