college and guidance counselor offices?

I have a ninth grader at one of the selective schools and am not from a personal background where school counselors helped me understand college options in high school.

When and how does engaging with them Walls or Banneker make sense? How are they useful to students and families?

To date we've received emails with some material of decidedly mixed value. Perhaps good for somebody else, or somebody further along in the process.

What's worth trying to do?
