Trump wants his cake and eat it, too (defense)

But no one wants to buy him the cake.

Trump wants the EU to pay more for defense, tells them that the US is no longer going to cooperate and pay for NATO if the EU doesn't pay their fair share, pulls back funding for Ukraine. So, the EU steps up to produce more weapons themselves, and now Trump is crying "foul" saying "we want in, you have to buy weapons from us". What a dumba$$. Is this how he negotiates? He's all over the place.

U.S. officials have told European allies they want them to keep buying American-made arms, amid recent moves by the European Union to limit U.S. manufacturers' participation in weapons tenders, five sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the foreign ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia that the United States wants to continue participating in EU countries' defense procurement

Trump has urged European allies to spend more on defense and take greater responsibility for their own security. As it does so, the EU is looking to bring manufacturing in-house in light of the U.S. president's suggestions that his commitment to NATO is not absolute.

That runs counter to another Trump administration goal, which is to open foreign markets to U.S. manufacturers.

The mid-March defense proposal by the European Commission, dubbed ReArm Europe, included a plan to borrow 150 billion euros ($162 billion) for loans to EU governments to spend on defense projects.

This seems to be his thing. Same as telling the EU and Canada that there will be consequences if they work together to "harm the US economy". Which means working out trade deals that don't include the U.S.

He thinks he can have it both ways. Demand other countries spend more money on defense, AND that the money has to be spent in the US.

It doesn't work that way. His tantrums are only going to get worse.

Canada looked at canceling F35 contracts outside of what is already committed to, and going elsewhere.

Oh no, no, no... can't do that!!

Let us know when he's finished throwing toys. The grown ups are talking now.

It's basically extortion. He behaves like a dictator.

He can demand anything he wants, and people are free to ignore him.

His economic plan is a total shitshow. Taunting our allies is not going to make them want to work with us.

The GOP has shatterd the US defense industry and the western alliance in one fell swoop.

Also, with a reduction in what’s considered under the auspices of the UD, it makes sense that DOD will have to slash its budget.

It seems other countries aren't ignoring him, they're just cutting him out as much as possible. That will infuriate him.

He doesn’t know anything about history or policy or governance, he is incapable/unwilling to consider anything from someone else’s perspective, he has rarely faced negative consequences, he doesn’t think before he speaks, he’s not actually a good negotiator, he’s filled his cabinet with unqualified loyalists, and he is reviled internationally. He’s right on target.

This is exactly how he bankrupted a handful of companies. Yet, people their faith in the whims of a madman with dementia.

This entire era has been so eye opening to me WRT to the unearned credibility of mediocre white men of all ages.
