Homework during CAPE testing

Anonymous
DCPS- "Ok kids, important CAPE testing this week, make sure you get a good night's sleep."

Also DCPS- "We don't care that you have CAPE testing this week, here's the usual 2-3 hours of homework."

How does this make sense?

You get home at what, 4-5, eat dinner, 2-3 hours of homework puts you in bed by 10 if you include a shower.

What’s the problem?

For my teenager it's more like home around 6:00, in bed by 11:00, maybe asleep by 12:00. Up NLT 6:30 in order to take the bus to school. That's just not enough sleep.

Somehow, I bet they will live through this week.

Why are you saying DCPS instead of your school’s name? This is a school issue, not a DCPS issue. Also, CAPE testing does not take the entire day, so instruction should still be occurring. 2-3 hours of homework seems like a bit much, so reach out to your admin about it and see if they can come up with a school protocol.

Why do you care about CAPE testing? The results come a year later and have zero impact on your individual child. It’s not the SATs or ACTs! It’s a day like normal (kids after school activities, homework, bed, repeat..)

Have them skip homework once a week to go to sleep earlier.
