Parochial or Mann?

Currently at an archdiocese parochial but got a spot at Mann. We live EOTP and work downtown. Should we even consider this offer?

Consider why you submitted a lottery application. Do you have a plan for middle/high via the parochial school or will you be looking at DCPS or charters for that path?

Good question. I assume we’d continue with a Catholic HS if we stayed at the parochial through 8th. Our zoned HS is a no go and Latin seems like such a long shot. My hesitation with staying where we are is whether the school is academic enough, which is why we’ve continued to play the lottery. But given how DC is these days, I also have no idea whether we will even stay that long. Our kid is in lower elementary now.

Mann is an amazing school. I would absolutely take it.

Mann seems far away from you. Think hard about the commute.

Good lord op, what would that commute be? I mean, you're looking at minimum 90 minutes (45 minutes round trip twice a day), no?

We are OOB at Mann and live EOTP and it takes about 25m to get there in the morning - take the offer, it’s a great school!

How far is the parochial school? I know a PP said it’s 25 minute EOTP to Mann but I think it really depends where you live. If you live right off 16th street I could see 25 minutes. If you live in Brightwood or Petworth, there’s no way it’s 25 minutes. Mann is 20 minutes from those neighborhoods with no traffic.

I can't even tell what you're trying to say by juxtaposing being closer if you're "right off 16th" with being farther if you live in either of 2 neighborhoods that are each literally along 16th.

Take it, OP. You're not going to be locked out of parochial if it doesn't work out.

OP here. We live in Petworth and the parochial is 12-15 min away but generally on the way to the office downtown. Mann for us would mean cutting across the park then heading south to get to city center. Kid is in early elementary and we’ve been happy, but I keep playing the lottery because of middle and high school.

Only you can decide on your commute, but just adding my two cents that our family absolutely loves Mann. I’m convinced it’s the best elementary school in DC, public or private, but obviously am biased

There are parts of Petworth that are not right along 16th street. If you live near New Hampshire it takes long to drive across to Mann. And that adds ten minutes to your drive.

Take it no question

Your job as a parent is to provide the best education possible for your kid. Mann is the answer to that.

Give some serious thought to the commute. There are reasons to go dcps. But I wouldnt specifically choose Mann if it means commuting much more than an hour to first drop your child at school and then continue on to work.
