Mundo Verde bilingual PCS charter starting with 3yo preschool to kinder was approved this year. Anyone care to share how things are going? How many families, funding, etc The address says 2001 S St which is the Secret Safeway building, right?

2001 S. St. is the location of the old "City Collegiate PCS" which closed its doors in June and is no longer in operation.

I could not find a website for them. Has anyone seen it?
Anonymous
No, but I saw some information on the PCSB's page.

Mundo Verde Bilingual School aims to foster high levels of academic achievement among a diverse group of students by preparing them to be successful and compassionate global stewards of their communities through an engaging curriculum focused on sustainability and biliteracy. Mundo Verde will initially offer preschool through 1st grade classes and will add classes each year until it serves students through the 8th grade.

They are conditionally approved to have 142 students in grades Pre-S through 1st. By my count, that's 35 to 36 students per grade, but it will probably be bottom heavy (more Pre-S and Pre-K than 1st). That location at 2001 S in the old City Collegiate space is pretty nice for a brand new school.

Sounds like an interesting option...

This school is SO set up to join the charter school upper-middle class hit parade. Nice job securing the Dupont Circle location.

Not that KIPP doesn't deserve a mention, because it really does academically. It suffers from a lack of diversion of the student body, but is still an excellent choice in many ways.

Interesting choice of words, although I get your point. Regardless of diversity topic, KIPP schools are worth a visit just to see how they operate. I now have much higher expectations of our neighborhood school after seeing KIPP preschool and elementary.

I see conflicting information on their main page. Is it preschool thru K or 1st grade for the opening year?

The charter approval (on the PCSB website) says 1st. And here's their executive summary, which says the same thing. What website are you looking at for Mundo Verde?

Website says "Mundo Verde will open in August 2011 at 2001 S Street in Dupont Circle with preschool (starting at 3 years old) through Kindergarden" in one place. And, says "Open with preschool through first grade in August 2011, adding an additional grade each year through eighth grade" in another.

It occurs to me that "two immersion" probably means two different lotteries, one for English-speaking households and one for Spanish-speaking households.

If you're interested in this school, you'll probably want to contact them ASAP and stay on top of the process because with only half their spots (71) going to English-speakers they could fill up their waitlist pretty quickly.

Sorry, "two-way immersion."
