How long will Safeway last?

Anonymous
After hearing that the Safeway close to the Twinbrook station would close in April, I’m worried that the one by the Wheaton station will so close down. Safeway has been my favorite store to shop at for a while and I’m really sad to see it decline.

Source about the closure of Twinbrook Safeway by the way: https://mocoshow.com/2025/02/02/safeway-to-close-permanently-in-april/

Yikes, this is the third time I’m hearing a Safeway close in MoCo permanently (ironically enough all 3 of them were in or close to the Rockville area. Is there suppose to be a Wegmans opening there soon?

safeway is owned by albertsons

they may close a store but they are not going away

That Safeway doesn’t look old. I’ve lived around that area until 2020 and I never saw it there until around 2016, so basically almost a decade.

Yeah,
Late June.
Safeway gave up in that location.
It will be replaced by Asian fresh market.

The Safeway in Twinbrook is closing because Wegmans is opening in April and they won’t be able to compete. It shouldn’t affect the Wheaton location.

If the Kensington Safeway closes, we’re just going to starve.

It was a weird location to open a grocery store and I imagine they didn’t get a lot of foot traffic. No surprises that it closed. Albertsons, the company that owns Safeway, is huge conglomerate. No chance of them disappearing anytime soon.

Our Safeways in VA seems to last beyond the odds.

Yeah, and you can also find an Aldi/TJ’s just from the street. In MoCo Aldi is becoming popular than it was and they recently opened a new one in Gaithersburg.

Yep. The safeway near me (Fairfax) is a dump, never stocked, terrible produce, deli is kinda gross, etc...not sure how it's still opened. I wish it would get re-vamped.

Safeway in Tysons is well stocked, lots of fresh vegis, lots of freshly baked bread, wide selection of everything, bright, and clean. They are having zero difficulty competing with the expensive Wegmans about 2 blocks away.

The Anderson Road one? That's my favorite (I'm in Arlington, but I go to Anderson Road pretty regularly)

I do not understand the reverence for Wegmans. Maybe because I grew up with it, so it's just another grocery store to me?

The Safeway near me has a Starbucks. I am positive that's keeping the store afloat.

Wegmans used to be awesome when it first opened up around here. Now it’s gone downhill. Annoying price hikes (yes. I know all groceries have increased but theirs seem the most egregious) and bad customer service (though it has slightly improved). C service is hit or miss.
