I am seeking feedback on E.L. Haynes. I noticed that it is easier to get in when kids are in lower elementary (3rd grade and above). Is something wrong with the school? I am having a hard time understanding the test scores online. Do people stay in middle school? Is the school academically rigorous? |
Basically the academics are ok in elementary but in middle school less good, I think partly because the more academically advanced kids leave because their parents know it's time to get serious. So they're replaced by kids who aren't as academically strong. |
Ok thanks for letting me know. Would you rank it academically on the Brent, Janney, Hyde Addison level? I am curious what’s the hype about the school. |
Way worse than those schools. But for preschool and lower elementary it's fine.
Be aware of the calendar, it's very different. |
Thank you. I was wondering how the reading and math is in K. Will the kids learn well? |
We were at EL Haynes for prek3 - k and enjoyed it a lot. I would put it academically on par with a high-performing title I DCPS school, with better aftercare and much better arts/music. There was a lot of academic emphasis in pre-K, e.g. major focus on literacy. It was almost too much for me to be honest, I thought there was too much “work” and not that much play. The teachers are generally pretty good, we had an excellent pre-K4 teacher who was probably one of the best teachers my children have ever had. But all the teachers were good.
The art instruction was fantastic, and there was music and dance. That was wonderful. We left when we moved west of the park. We had never intended to stay past kindergarten, so I never really investigated the upper grades. Anecdotally, I think the vibe really changes in middle school. The middle school campus is on Jorge Avenue, and they almost doubled the class sizes. |
*georgia avenue. Not Jorge. Autocorrect. |
What are the test scores? Someone told me 20 percent |
The middle school is separate from the main campus, and does not have any real outdoor space. |
