magnet middle school 101

My child will start in the fall as 5th grader in mcps. Can someone please share information about magnet middle school program? What are the criteria? What are the chances? Lottery or test? We have not bought house yet, maybe in Gaithersburg/Germantown area.

Base your search on ensuring strong inbounds options. Magnets are selected by lottery among students deemed qualified, so you cannot count on getting a spot for even the most qualified students.

This. You have much better odds for high school magnet programs. Gaithersburg and Germantown would both position you well for high school at Poolesville, which has magnet programs for STEM, humanities and Global Ecology.

Whereever you pick, make sure it's physically close to the MS/HS you're interested in. Boundary studies are coming up and you don't want to deal with that. There are people on this thread who will say it won't matter since you can be bused to any school, but if you're within walking distance, that's a stretch. Good luck!

DP. Agree that OP should consider that boundaries may be changing -- I'd suggest renting for now if possible to have the flexiblity to move elsewhere if needed.
