All,

Is this a scam?

I'm on the phone with my FIL who is telling me a story about a transition from Washington Gas to IGS ENERGY and my heart is breaking because I think he was scammed. His bill went from 130$ last month to 786$ which is due 4/16.

He's saying he received a letter about this switch last month.

Any advice on how I can troubleshoot this?

Does he have the letter? Wash Gas does let you use other gas providers and they remain the delivery system but the prices are similar. Is his bill for several months? Is he on budget billing?
Who is the bill from? It should be Wash Gas.

Call them. Get father's account number from previous bill.
