Public Libraries or Other Places w/ Nice Study Environment (no coffee shops or pay to stay) WestFFX

Looking for place to study where you don’t have to pay for coffee or anything. Library would be great. I just want someplace I can go with or without my kids away from the house to do some (home)work once in awhile.

West Fairfax is a very broad area. Pohick Library has a quiet study room with probably 7 or 8 desk cubicles with outlets and barriers in between and a similar number of chairs with those fold up tables. I go there sometimes and I've never seen them all taken.

If you look at each library's page on the FCPL website, it will tell you if they have one or not. Just looked up Reston and it said no.

How quiet do you need it and do you need a desk?

Look on TripAdvisor or Google reviews for pics, and find a hotel lobby with comfortable nooks.

I like the City of Fairfax library, but I am not sure I would call that location "west Fairfax"

Ugh. Only go to a Ffx co library if you want to sit next to homeless/the unwashed/local weirdos.

Centreville and Chantilly libraries are nothing fancy but they are quiet. The GMU library or other buildings on campus might also work (although you have to pay for parking or find street parking and walk).

Don't laugh, but upstairs at Wegmans. Though there are sometimes little groups up there, there's enough space to find a quiet spot.

Thanks, everyone. It doesn’t have to be super quiet. I’d love to work in an old, fancy reading room like some universities have but that is a stretch from here. I’ve had some unpleasant experiences with homeless people at two FCPL. Generally, they are not a problem. But I’ve been next to someone who started what amounted to a sponge bath in the public area. And another incident that I can’t bring myself to write but it was gross. Again, most of them are fine, but when there are issues, the librarians are hard pressed to get things under control. I’ll co ti he going to these places but once in awhile I’d like to do my work in more … cozy, friendly, charming, work/study spaces.

Interesting. Had not considered that when not on travel. My fear would be that they’d figure out I wasn’t staying there. 🤔

I used to love spending an afternoon at the public library. Now I avoid them due to the homeless and mentally ill who camp out there during the day.

What a shame - we used to love taking our kids to the library.
