My child got into yu Ying but and is high enough in the wait list they will likely also get into DC Bilingual. Pk4. During the open house, DC bilingual explained there are no longer enough seats at DCI for DC Bilingual lower grades. Is it the same for Yu Ying? |
Yu Ying is also expanding so you should ask the school. |
At this year's Yu Ying open house they said that would likely happen to Yu Ying students too given their recent expansion. |
Since there is only one Chinese feeder, I think your odds are better. But we are in this boat with Mundo and I’m not worried about it. So far they have not turned anyone away from feeders, even in Spanish, which has the biggest capacity gap. |
Did DCB expand this year? There might not be enough spots for the CURRENT number on low graders in either school, but both schools have attrition up to fifth. DCB usually has 60-70 that attritions down to below the 50 seats at DCI. Yu Ying with the expansion has like 120 but if classes continue to whittle down in 5th to 60-70% of what it was in Pre-K, they will still be close to their allocation of 70. A little worse at the Mundos, where they have 150 in some grades ECE and 70 seats. But they have a little more attrition too. I think the feeders seem to have expanded to a pretty accurate size to expect the graduating class will match the allocated DCI seats. But they can't guarantee anything. |
Why doesn’t DCI grow to match feeder schools? |
This rings true to me. We won’t know for a few years what the effects of YY Expansion will be, but DCI does go to the lottery to fill Chinese seats currently, which suggests to me that Yu Ying doesn’t fill their allotment at present. |
DCI is already a large school, and has maxed out their space. This is actually not DCI's problem. It is a problem caused by the feeder schools, and DCI should not feel an obligation to accommodate. That is not what they agreed to when the school was founded. |
Just to build on this, DCI doesn’t have the physical space to expand. |
They would need to get another building. Maybe 1 building is the middle school and other is high school. They already have approval to increase numbers. But what they are doing and will do is offer all seats to feeder kids and non feeder kids will get shut out. They have been having discussions on how to expand but no definitive plan. |
I'd choose whichever school you like best. You are in the early stages of this, and the landscape may change a lot by the time your kid is ready to go to middle school. Yu Ying has expanded a lot this year-- they've added several PK-K classes. But things at either school could change a lot between now and then impacting the number of DCI seats. Or it might turn out that you decide DCI isn't the best path for your kid. I say this as someone who was at Yu Ying with a guaranteed spot at DCI, but when the time came, I chose to send my child elsewhere. Had you told me in PK3 that I would've made that choice, I wouldn't have believed you. So go with whichever school works best for your child and family. |
