For selective schools:
Noticing boys doing really well. Especially those not majoring in stem. Not a surprise I suppose, but even more reason for girls I think to choose an ED2 choice…. At our private last year, boys got in off of private T20 waitlists more than girls….anyone else seeing this trend? |
| It’s not a new trend. Colleges seem to be around 60% female, 40% male with more selective schools and tech universities being more even. Colleges know that families prefer a more even gender ratio if possible. |
| So we should expect bad news for girls in selective RD? |
Yes, it’s been that way all year. Early rounds this fall were horrible for girls. |
|
I have girl, boy twins. Final apps for both are pending but my son has received admissions that his sister has not despite his grades not being as strong. Also true among their friends with average boys getting admitted over girls with perfect grades.
As a woman it makes me secretly very frustrated. |
That is until you DD is in college and now her “future husband”options are 3 out 10 students…. |
I see that but I also see the opposite happening at tech schools like MIT and Caltech. |
Not only in tech schools, I have been seeing this trend at all selective schools in STEM. Boys are always on the chopping block. |
Join us in the 21st century, won’t you? |
| Ugh this is so upsetting. |
I hear you, but my senior daughter absolutely looked at schools with lopsided gender ratios and ruled them out. |
| Having a daughter going through this process now, the female skew of female students is something we noted (and didn't see as a positive). Noticed more state schools have more m/f gender balance vs many privates. If given the option, my kid prefers schools that have gender balance. Of note, my daughter is a super strong student with focused professional goals, but she also wants to date guys and have a fun and social college experience. |
I’m sorry, but students are 18-22 in college. They are barely out of their teens. They are not looking for husbands. |
Maybe not at that age but they will want college educated spouses. |
| We have heard many stories of girls at colleges who can't find guys to date at schools with gender imbalances. Just 1 of many things to consider. |
