Do you use a muzzle?

Anonymous
We love our 7 yr old dog (terrier doxy mix) but he is a rescue and nippy. We want to train him on a muzzle when he is around other people. Have you used a muzzle and if so, how was it training him/her and what muzzle do you use? Thanks for the advice.

By terrier, do you mean pit bull?

Definitely use a muzzle when out if you are walking a pit bull mix rescue dog.

No why would you ask that? It’s a small terrier foxy mix.

I use a soft muzzle for our 60 lb Lab and who-knows-what-else mix. Ours isn't a biter but he is a poop eater along with other gross stuff on the street. It works well. He doesn't like it but it does the job. We tried the plastic cage ones but they had some sharp places that left marks on his face.

Dear hysterical anti-pit poster: please take your meds. Muzzle yourself, if necessary. You're not helping your own case; you just seem mental.

Our vet recommended the one by Baskerville. Our dog doesn’t bite, but eats anything he can get on the ground, including rocks. There are lots of training videos online.

I just want to commend you on being responsible, OP.

There are a lot of youtube videos on counterconditioning the muzzle. Find one big enough they can still take treats and make a game with it for a while. (Slip it on, treat, remove, extending the time before removal)

Thank you all for the advice - OP
