The library on the US side has been accessed by Canadians for 100 years. No more, US rescinded access. Wonder what will happen with the Peace Garden in ND/CA? They have music camps there btw. So petty. I'm sure there's hundreds if not thousands of "little steps" that don't even get attention. |
That's so sad. |
You left out the reason behind it. Why?
It noted there have been a number of incidents in and around the library that resulted in apprehensions in recent years, including a person attempting to smuggle firearms in the past year. |
They don't say where that person was from. No fentanyl found? No eggs recently? Guns aren't a problem for many people. |
From which country to which country? |
Smuggle firearms in to Canada right? Because the other way makes no sense. |
Yeah, that’s an important bit of info. Also, the article said that people admitted had to have a library card. What happens to people who want to APPLY for a card? This is sad, but it sounds like the issue is that the entry on the Canadian side needs to be paved and upgraded. I hope their fundraising efforts for this are successful. The history of cooperation in this town sounds wonderful. |
Still seems petty. CBP is already in the area and able to monitor people.
The smuggling incident happened in 2017. Two co-conspirators from Florida, and a guy from Montreal. Guns went to Canada. https://uniset.ca/fatca/vlachos_superseding.pdf https://www.vermontpublic.org/vpr-news/2017-06-20/international-smuggler-used-derby-line-library-to-sneak-guns-over-u-s-canada-border The building sits on the border so hard to see why they need to block use of the sidewalk, because it will STILL straddle the border when people can use the back door as well. But apparently Noem did a photo op there. |
The firearm incident happened under Trump's first term, ( not recent) and the guns were going to Canada? 🤔 Yeah I guess don't let Canadians access that part of the library. I'm sure it makes sense rattling around in someone's mind. |
It’s really a small world. My grandmother was born there in one of the homes that was half on the Canadian side and half on the American side. The town is called Beebee on the Canadian side. |
If library access is outlawed, only outlaws will access the library! |
That sounds complicated — but maybe kind of interesting for a kid. Do you remember any odd details about their situation? Two sets of property taxes? Two sets of options for schools? (Yes, I do plan to Google this.) |

She was born in the early 1900s, so I do not know. I know that the Canadian side was known for Loyalists as well as helping those a part of the Underground Railway. During my undergrad degree in geography, we stayed there as part of a field course, and I had to count trucks crossing the border to think about cross-border towns. |
Does Canada put any money up for it? If not, then good. They can start paying their fair share if they want access. |
