| LG electric front loader clothes washer over 10 years old. Just started making squealing noise in spin cycle, even when off and manually turning the drum by hand. Getting ready to sell condo and don't want to have to buy a new stacking unit with dryer. Safe to use for time being? Thanks for any help! |
| Needs a new belt. 10 min fix you can do yourself. Plenty of YouTube videos. |

thanks! unfortunately i need 1 or 2 linebackers to lift over threshhold out of tight condo closet and take dryer off top (both are gigantic and i cannot do myself and don't want liability of asking anyone to do it that i don't hire that is licensed and insured). unless belt removal can be done from front inside? seems cannot be done that way.
dryer is 20 years old and washer is 15. i don't know if replacing will help me get a better sales price,or at least recoup the cost, and realtors know? seems this may be my best option as i already paid 400 7 years ago to fix this washer's motor and other items. |
| Appliances can be repaired. I had someone out to look at an old Maytag, the part needed was expensive but still available. The tech said it was a better machine than today's but didn't recommend completing the repair because he could see the parts were becoming scarce. I asked for opinions on new machines. He said Electrolux are very good but very expensive to repair. Speed Queen okay, fairly expensive to repair, but pretty reliable. LG mediocre but most affordable to repair. I bought an LG, so far no issues. Anyway, yes it can be repaired, should be less than new. |
| At that age, you can repair but you won’t know what will break next and when. Replace with a decent set and advertise “new w/d”! |
| I tried to get a washer repaired. they charge just for showing up, charge for part even if doesn't work. I would never, ever repair a washer ever again. buy new. |
| Do you....not know how to use prepositions? |
| Or Capital letters? Or punctuation? Or Articles? |
| The good news is its likely the rollers or a belt which are are cheap parts. The bad news is that unless your a contortionist you need to have it out in the open to access the 20+ screws they put in the things to open it up. I'd suspect a good $300-$500 in labor to get it done if its got to be unhooked and moved to be worked on. |
| it is a direct drive system and it has no belt, so not sure what it is |

Cheap fix to DIY if you can get some help moving them to get at it.
Stacked washer/dryer combos are ridiculous, you couldn't give me a brand new set of those things. Most front load washers are hot garbage also, and mold factories if you don't leave the door open when not in use. Liquid detergent adds to the mold issues. Powdered is better, mix before use. |
To take the dryer off, set up a couple plastic sawhorses beside it with some boards on top. Slide the dryer over onto the sawhorse platform. Do your work on the washer, then slide the dryer back on and reconnect. Citation: I had to do this with a Maytag set once. No linebackers in sight. |
| I would not spend a few hundred to repair a 10 year old washer. |
| I'd just sell it as is or have the appliances removed. Our condo came without laundry appliances. |
Bearings probably need to be replaced. |
