| I finally got a book I've had on hold for 2 months. I picked it up today and it has a Lucky Day stamp (the red sticker labeled B&T) on the side of it. I've never gotten a book on hold that was from the Lucky Day Shelf; I thought one of the points of the LD shelf was that you can't hold them, the other that you can't renew it. Is it eligible for renewal? All of my other holds have been able to be renewed and I've received dozens of them. The website isn't clear whether I can renew it. Since it has a long hold list I will read it ASAP and return it, but I'm unsure why I was given this book at all. I asked two librarians and neither seemed to know or care. |
| I don't think you can renew anything that someone else has a hold on anyway, so it doesn't matter whether it has a Lucky Day stamp. |
| If you have the book in hand, just keep it until you're done. Didn't they do away with late fees? |
| What book? I just reserved “ James” and it looks like I will be waiting more than 2 months. Meanwhile, book club is in 4 weeks. |
Interesting, thank you! |
That's the problem with book clubs, they usually pick a popular book that you have to buy. |
Yeah, I wish there was an agreement to choose books that came out several years back. Mine chose the Let Them Theory which is not only wildly popular right now, but also seems like a trend I cannot get on board with. |
|
OP here - I figured it out. You can't renew books that other people have on hold. So it doesn't matter if it's a Lucky Day Shelf book or not.
https://montgomerycountymd.gov/library/services/ask-a-librarian.html Why am I unable to renew a checked-out item? Some materials cannot be renewed, including: Items for which others have placed hold requests. |
| So interesting. I recently found a lucky day book that I had on hold and I was able to renew it. I actually questioned the librarian at the time and they gave me another two , maybe three weeks. |
|
Probably a previous Luck Day book, that no longer has Lucky Day status.
I have one book on hold where I'm number 208 on the list. Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams. I think I'll be reading it in 2027 at that rate! |
The new Emily Henry book is even longer wait. I’m 84 for Careless people |
hopefully they get more copies--I just returned mine via Libby...I got it faster than I thought I would. |
| I know I'll probably get flamed for this, but why don't you just buy a copy of James? It's $18 on Amazon. Why go through all the machinations when you can get it sent to you overnight? Or ask some friends who aren't in your book club if they have a copy. |
I don’t buy books because I read a lot. I have already read 20 books this year. At 60 books for $10 each, that’s too much when I can get it with my tax paid library books. And I don’t want to store all of these books when I’m done with them. I don’t like e readers so not buying the kindle version. Last, I have plenty of other books I can read while I wait for something on a long list. |
