Anyone just back from Europe? Specifically, Paris, Rome, or Milan.

How is the climate toward Americans in those cities?

We have two trips booked this summer and I'm wondering if we should cancel. I saw one friend of a friend of a friend's social media post about their daughter being treated poorly in Cyprus during her spring break trip just because she was American. I took note of it but didn't dwell on it b/c I don't know them directly and what if her kid was being a brat?

But then the sister of my good friend posted a warning that they received terrible service in London during their spring break trip last week because they were from the US. I trust her account of things because I know her and have known her for many years.

This sounds a little silly to me. That’s like asking if you should cancel your trip to LA because two random friends of friends each had a rude waiter in Florida and Chicago.

My DC lives in London (actually lives there, not study abroad), and says it's been fine since most people are able to differentiate between citizens and the current administration. But there can always be a few who have a negative reaction. Frankly I'd be more worried about travel to Canada than Europe.

We're French and my parents live in Paris. As PP said, you can't judge from a couple of bad experiences. Paris is a teeming city and my circle of friends and relatives in Paris is full of people who have lived abroad, US included, and know not to single out individuals just because of their nationality. But of course... if you're unlucky, you might get the one person who's been riled up by too many headlines that morning and who is going to make you wait for service or give you the worst room... or call you out in front of everyone.

People in Cyprus treat everyone poorly. Americans are nothing special.

You could always just tell people you're Canadian if you're that worried. Tell them you're from BC if they ask so there's no real accent difference. But, I really think you'll be fine. Maybe don't wear a MAGA hat or talk about politics...but I wouldn't worry that much. Source: I live in southern Italy.

We were just in Stockholm. Based on a few conversations we had with people in service jobs and the family that’s hosting my DD while she’s in a program there, they are concerned but understand that many Americans do not share this administration’s views. We did not feel that we were unwelcome—quite the opposite.

Great time to roll out a fake British accent.

A friend just got back from Switzerland. They said people were pleasant, when the conversation turned to politics there were generally interested in understand what is happening in the US. They didn't blame or treat my friend badly and she was grateful for the open dialogue.

People understand that most Americans do not support this. But that doesn't mean they won't boycott American products and otherwise make sure Europe is not so dependent on US goods, services and arms.

If anyone gives you grief apologize for no longer paying for their defense.

Why don’t you do that PP? Reinforce the stereotype of dumb, ignorant Americans.
