| When I was in college, there was little to no advising system that I knew of. Big state school. What are colleges that your DCs attend that have good advising systems? More so directed towards parents of kids attending universities rather than SLACs which tend to have better advising systems because of their sizes naturally. Universities of any size will do. |
| You want advising systems at universities to cater to parents of college students? Does such a service exist for parents at any schools? |
Ok you want to hear from parents of stufents at universities and not really the parents of students at SLACs because they are smaller and have "good" advising. Students have said their department advising was good at Univ of MD. |
DP, but I’m sure OP means the *question is directed* mostly to parents of students at universities because the assumption is that SLACs already do a better job of advising. The advising is for the students. |
| What is an advising system? |
| I don’t really think is up to the college to advise. You get as good of advising as you ask for. I went to an LAC and had mediocre advising but I never asked for it. |
| Oh brother. |
| Not really formal advising but I think colleges with residential housing programs or where upperclassmen still live in mixed age dorms can provide a sort of advising benefit. Easier to get help/advice on classes, homework, etc. if you interact daily with older students hanging out in the nearby lounge rather than sequestered in small friend groups off campus. And it can be an eye opening teachable moment to watch your neighbor hustling to find a job senior year or seeing how they didn't graduate because they failed a class, etc. |
Does not exist. Parents and prospective students do not do enough looking at the curriculums of the schools they apply to. |

William & Mary has really good advising, both "pre-major advising" (what I guess used to be called "freshman advising) and "major advising".

| I can tell you Syracuse has bad advising. |
| UMD has terrible advising, the student will have to be very aware of requirements and stay on top. |
| When I was at UCLA and majoring in psychology there was an entire office of full-time psychology academic advisors. They helped with making sure you graduated, checked transfer credits before you took summer school, and generally knew their stuff, especially as it differed depending on when you came in. |
Back in the dino days? |
| 20:31 Not true of all advising at UMD. Could be harder if OP is asking about general advising |
