Teachers—your thoughts on skipping the day before a break?

Anonymous
Our middle and high schoolers both finished their midterm final tests today and the marking period is now over, but they still have school tomorrow. I get it, they need to be in school X number of days and this extra day acts as a buffer in the event finals can’t be completed on time, etc. What are your honest thoughts on skipping a day like that? DH and I both managed to get tomorrow off and we are considering going away for the weekend, maybe even tonight. But I feel so bad for the teachers. Don’t actually appreciate the lighter load? Do you anticipate absences?

Our entire school does it through middle school and it’s incredibly aggravating. School already adds random early releases and days off before breaks and it just bumps the absences earlier. Some families take and entire week off before break. It gets to the point where there are so many days wasted for kids who don’t travel that I would almost just start skipping so my kid could draw or read or exercise instead of sitting around watching a random half of a movie.

I'm a MS teacher. Zero issues with it if the student is caught up on work.

+1 from a HS teacher. Don’t feel bad about it. Zero issues from me too.
