How much does your 10 year old girl weigh?

Anonymous
Mine is 4’6” and only weighs 70 pounds. She is 10 but looks much smaller than her friends who are already starting to develop. I had read somewhere that girls tend to go through puberty as they get closer to 100 pounds because their bodies make enough hormones to go through puberty. At this rate my DD will be in high school before she hits 100 pounds. Is this something I should worry about?

She has steadily been falling in percentiles throughout her life. Started big in the 99th percentile at birth, dropped to 60th percentile around 2 and stayed there. But now at 10 she is in the 45th percentile for both weight and height.

Is her doctor concerned?

Op - not overly but we have been monitoring her weight.

Her sister is in the 70th percentile and brother is in the 99th percentile. So she just seems so petite when she is with them!

A kid in the 45th percentile whose doctor isn’t worried shouldn’t be a source of worry for you.

My kids are two different sizes too. I wouldn't worry about it.

Mine is about 65 lbs and her doctors are worried as she has fallen off her growth curve. She is a picky eater and I try to get as many calories in her as I can even if it is a lot of junky stuff.

My DD is 10 and average height and not even close to 70 lbs. If your doctor isn't worried and developmentally she is fine, you shouldn't worry.

I'm not sure about others, but me and several of my (female) friends didn't hit 100 lbs until jr or sr year of high school.

My 10 year old daughter is a decent bit smaller than yours: ~4 foot 3 inches and 60 pounds but she’s always been petite since birth and neither her doctor nor I have any concerns.

She’s also already starting to develop a tiny bit so the 100 lb thing seems way off to me.

Jumping percentiles between 2 and 10 is worrisome, but you can’t really compare those to percentile at birth. Babies come late, are compared to babies who came early but whose due dates were miscalculated, babies can be hydrated/dehydrated, etc.

Falling off a growth curve is something to think about. If it just happened recently, has she added height? Maybe this is a growth spurt. But if she isn’t eating enough or has increased exercise a lot in recent years, then you want to examine fueling.

I have a kid who has stayed steady in her growth curve but who does an intense sport. To keep her on the curve, we have to add in any extra calories we can after she has the healthy basics. With intense sports or big growth spurts it can be hard to add sufficient healthy calories because they can only digest so much fiber and they need more carbs.

I definitely wouldn’t even think about the 100 lb thing. Some girls in my DD’s class are probably close, but have older sisters who are smaller. Everyone, even in the same family, develops at a different pace.

OP this is not something to worry about. At all. She sounds healthy. I’d be more worried about the 10 year olds approaching 100lbs.

My kid was a little smaller than that at 10. At 13 she is probably about 5'1" or 5'2" and she weighs about 95 pounds. Lots of growing happens in the next few years.

Where do people get these silly ideas like you need to weigh 100 lbs to get your period or most 10 year olds are starting to develop?

My 11.5 yo is only about 70 lbs. I do expect her to be in high school before she starts puberty. Her pediatrician is paying attention and said she's just a late bloomer.

Let her eat ice cream every night unless she's overweight

My 9 year old is 52 lbs, she was always in the bottom 5% on growth chart though. When she was born ( 3 weeks early), she was only 4 lbs. She basically stopped growing in the uterus in the last month of pregnancy. She is healthy though and has plenty of energy, but she is so tiny though. Her friends always wear clothes and shoes 1-2 sizes bigger.
