Driving (rental car) in the Yucatan - Tips

Next month we will be travelling in the Yucatan - mostly around Merida. We will be renting a car (through Hertz). I have driven rental cars in Europe and Canada without issue - but I get the sense that Mexico comes with its own unique challenges. For example - I understand there are some weird laws about insurance down there.

Input would be appreciated.

You do have to get Mexican insurance, and you might consider getting the “every scrape” level of insurance.

The only tricky part is once in a while the police will pull you over, take your drivers license and say you either need to show up to court or pay a “fine” on the spot to get it back. But I wouldn’t let that stop you from renting.
