AP Art History

DD is an average student and is very interested in art. She has only taken one AP class previously and didn't do great - barely a B. Is AP Art history difficult? Is there a lot of memorization? What is the homework load and testing like?

Depends on the school. At our MCPS school, Poolesville it has a reputation of being tough.

Known as one of the tougher APs.

It’s a pretty difficult AP course, but it’s not really offered much across schools.

PHS parent here, never knew they had AP Art History here, is it new or has it been there for a while?

+1 It's a lot of memorization, of artists and artworks, but also critical concepts and interpretations. So it's not quite the same as memorizing more straightforward historical facts for AP History exams. Also instructor expertise on the material varies considerably. You might get someone with an MA or even a PhD in art history teaching it, or someone who had to self-teach the material with no real background.

I would suggest she take it, I think it’s great to find a new subject that you’re interested in. Why didn’t she do well in the other AP? Is she not a good writer? Maybe get her a writing tutor. I wish kids didn’t shy away from interesting classes because they think GPA is the be all end all.

Wouldn't it be nice if college admissions didn't make GPA the be all end all?
