Are your politics the same as your parents?

Growing up, I always assumed I would follow my parents political views. Went to collage, changed my views, then changed again and have been with the same party for the past 20 yrs.

Just curious, do your politics match those of your parents and do you expect your children to follow yours?

1. Good God, no.

2. I worry that my son will rebel and head in the opposite direction, so as to distinguish himself or something.

Oh hell no. They are almost as scary as the tea party folks. I'm pretty liberal.

Ditto and ditto! My parents are conservative, evangelical Christian, I'm an atheist, liberal verging on socialist.

I've gotten more liberal over the past 10 years.

OTOH, I'm not per se hostile to small government if implemented in a manner that doesn't translate to "let them eat free market."

Dunno.

I think of myself as progressive and my father as conservative (mom's a Glen Becker -- can't talk about that ). Interesting thing is that he is willing to listen to contrary points of view, defend his and challenge mine. In the end when we talk about how to solve the "big issues" we end up in a very similar place. I guess my father is a rare breed of conservative...one with an open mind...that and both of us have engineering and business degrees.

My parents split their vote, so for me the question doesn't make sense.

Same here!

My parents are really like Black liberal tea partiers (if there is such a thing) with views so extreme in the opposite direction that they really should be something like the Old Crazy People Party. I'm not very liberal, pretty independent and conservative on some things.

LOL! I think my parents would also belong to that party

My parents were old FDR liberals. I guess this acorn did not fall too far from the tree.

My parents are conservative, as am I although I strayed one time!

Having said that, I have tons of friends who are quite liberal and our debates pretty much end up in the same place at the end of the discussion. OOTW - we actually agree on several fundamentals rather than disagree.

Conservatives are not as horrible as everyone makes us out to be. We actually do have open minds and are willing to see "the other side". Funny how the media (both sides) is so successful at shaping our opinions of other people when we don't even give ourselves the chance to sit down and debate with someone from the opposite party. We make assumptions that are not accurate such as "ALL CONSERVATIVES ARE WAR MONGERS, AND BIBLE THUMPERS" and "ALL LIBERALS ARE SOCIALISTS WHO LOVE TO KILL BABIES".

I would say that most of us fall somewhere in the middle of both parties, and at the end of the day we agree more than disagree, if we would just take the time to discuss openly and honestly.
