| Recently laid off former USAID implementation partner here… with a lot of writing and editing experience. I was wondering if there is demand out there for writing tutors? I am currently working with a young woman attending Montgomery College and I figured I can do more of this. Let me know your opinion?! |
| For college essays yes! |
| For middle school yes! |
|
Yes for sure. MCPS does so little writing; lots of kids supplement.
We work with a writing tutor who is an MCPS teacher (outside our school). Given that your work has been outside of education, you should think about what your skills are at teaching writing, as opposed to just being a good writer -- they are different skills. Good luck. |
| Have you seen the ELA proficiency levels for MCPS? Yes, there’s a need for reading/writing tutors! |
| I have worked with many clients on admissions essays. Plenty of work out there in this space if you work well with people and can write/edit. |
I would network with college counselors to learn what is involved in getting into college essay tutoring. |
| Yes, how do we find you? |
You start with one of the companies that offer it. You will eventually want to go out on your own, because you will make a lot more money that way. But get the experience doing it first and be careful about signing a noncompete. |
+1 Have been having trouble finding ones near to our home with availability. |
This is a really good point. Not to say that you would not be great as a writing tutor but it's something to think about. |

OP, look at how you can register as a tutor with Wyzant and other tutoring services. That’s how we found our tutor.
Also see if there are PTAs or parent groups on Facebook and IG, and ask if you can publicize/advertise your services. |
