Is there a reason NOT to request the packet prior to the decisions coming out? My DD is probably borderline based on what I see here - 129 NNAT, 135 COGAT. She gets all 4s in academic subjects and has 99% on the fall iReady. But she was not in pool. I want to be ready if we have to appeal but I am honestly a little afraid the AART is going to find it weird that I am asking and hold it against my kid somehow. Is that nuts? |
It's perfectly reasonable to request the packet. I don't see a reason NOT to request it. The AART won't find it weird - this is part of their job. |
We requested the packet when my son was under consideration. He was still under the GBRSs with comments so the packet provided better insight then any conference or report card. The comments let us know that things we had talked about at home were being applied to school and that he was more curious about some subjects then we knew. It pointed his weaknesses, mainly writing, which we already knew but was still good information to have.
It would be nice if there was a space for comments from the Teachers and not just cheked boxes. I think those provide a better feel for the student. |
Part of the point of the move to HOPE was saving teachers time because they no longer had to write commentary. |
Requesting the packet should be standard in my opinion. I found so much useful information in how they see my child. It wasn't glowing but it wasn't completely terrible either so we'll see. |
Also if it makes you feel better, I don't believe the AART isn't part of the appeal decision. Look at the appeal form here: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/AAPAppealForm.pdf |
It's true, it's completely parent driven, as my AART said. I requested the packet and she sent it same day, happily. She also answered my questions about it. You have nothing to lose although you might find some things annoying (e.g., bad work samples for the school, etc.) OP you must be in a high SES school. Your daughter should be a shoe in! |
I'm glad you said that. If OPs daughter is borderline, then my kid has no hope. It seems like everyone on here has kids with 99 percentile iReady as if that's just a given for AAP. |
My kid at a mid-SES school got in with an 89th percentile iReady math last year. As in DC didn't even qualify for level II in math (requires 90th percentile iReady at our school), but was in for level IV AAP. Academically doing just fine in 3rd. |
OP here - I am basing that she is borderline on the scores from here -- maybe that is not accurate? We are not at a high SES school. We are in the West Potomac pyramid but Waynewood. |
|
I found that the teacher input (gbrs) was more important than good test scores. All 4s is indicative that your child likely has a good HOPE and has a good shot. Especially if they have all 4s in the good citizen sections... |
Why didn’t you opt out of the HOPE? |
Those of you opting out of the HOPE: are you sure this isn't also opting out of AAP? I agree that it is subjective. But if it is weighted the highest, you may be doing your kid a disservice by opting out. |
Your AART was not in charge of reviewing AAP packet. Also he/she probably have seen much weirder parents than you. |
