They were from the weather-monitoring program.
https://bethesdamagazine.com/2025/03/13/noaa-silver-spring-lay-offs/ What happens if a hurricane hits Miami, and there is no one left to notice and notify people in harm's way? |
| What happens is "thoughts and prayers", which are the GOP go-to for any catastrophe. |
| This absolutely makes no sense. |
Even better is Rick Scott trying to move NASA HQ to FL, with this happening at the same time. It makes no sense. DC and surrounding areas are good for all the HQs because we have so few natural disasters. The stupidity is breathtaking. |
Stupidity, thy name is MAGA. |
The article seems to cover the probationary employees — have another 1000 been notified of a RIF? |
| Elon is going to conveniently move existing satellites under starlink control. Technocracy |
| Those in hurricane prone areas do not want the government to tell them what to do. They do not need weather forecasting. It is an unnecessary government service, along with food inspection, medical device and pharmaceutical oversight, grants and subsidies to farmers, natural disaster assistance, counterterrorism efforts, investigations of kidnappings, serial killers, timely processing of tax returns etc. These are all things the American public has voted to downsize or eliminate (among many other programs). |
The goal of the NWS layoffs is to benefit commercial for-profit weather forecasting companies, such as AccuWeather. |
I know this is meant as a joke, but the normal "Wait until a red state in a twister-prone area gets blinded by a massive roof-ripping storm without notice" doesn't work anymore, because Trump WANTS America to fail. It won't hurt him because it's the point of what he's doing. He's harming us -- on purpose. Even the dumb red state residents who voted from him don't deserve to be blindside twice. |
+1 That is all they have, their mindless prayers to the god they don't even really seem to believe in. |
I'm pretty sure they have. My neighbor who works there mentioned this. |
| Did they give the proper notice this time? |
I presume so, as they involved HR and the leadership of the agency. |

The irony is that improved weather forecasting a actually saves money.
Hurricane Dorian would have cost Florida a fortune due to evacuations and lost productivity if it wasn't for advancements in modeling that indicated the storm would not hit Miami as a major hurricane as everyone initially feared. Unfortunately, it instead sat over the Bahamas and devastated that country for days--but Florida was lucky in that case. The loss of NOAA staff will result in higher insurance costs over time due to reduced progress in forecasting accuracy. |
