The return of spelling in MCPS ES!

I am so happy that MCPS's new curriculum includes a strong focus on spelling. My ES kids are now learning rules of spelling and getting weekly spelling tests based on those rules. My older kids, who did Curriculum 2.0 and Benchmark for ES, didn't have spelling as far as I could tell -- and certainly no spelling lists sent home. This is a big improvement.

Wow. There are a bunch of terrible spellrz in middle school through college who had to suffere through 2.0 and blahmark in ES. Well done, mcps.

The 2.0 Guinea pigs weren’t taught how to spell or write.

Our school had a Come to Jesus moment when they finally realized the 5th graders weren’t equipped for middle school. They were the real Guinea pigs who endured the horrific 2.0 curriculum throughout elementary school.

Congrats on the return to commonsense, but it won’t be enough.

If you have the money, send your kid to private school. I’m so angry at myself for not finding a way to get out of mcps.

Pulled my child out after 4th. The Covid Zoom school really opened my eyes to the poor curriculum. The teachers my child had in that 1.5 years were both energetic and passionate about teaching. It was all poor curriculum. I want to emphasize I have no complaints about the actual teachers.

They'll market it as new. The name will change, most other parts of the new curriculum won't.

Of course there are because they were never taught spelling. How do you not teach spelling in elementary school? Oh right because they thought those students will rely on spell check.

There has always been spelling in ES, even in C2.0

Maybe at your W school? Our poor Focus school had ZERO spelling instruction in ES. Our MS did hold a spelling bee and we forced our kids to participate in the hopes that it would help a little with spelling.

Same. The finances would have been a struggle for us, so we stuck with MCPS.

No clue why this is so difficult.

Elementary schools should have a curriculum that includes spelling along with vocabulary and grammar.

Private schools use workbooks for spelling and vocab.

DP. My kids were at a Focus school in Silver Spring 2008-2017, and both had spelling there.
