| Do you need to be an achilles teammate to make Freshman and JV? We went to open house and they sent us an email to go to a summer camp. Is this the way you get in? Kid is on Bethesda travel going into 9th. |
| No, you do not need to go to the Achilles summer camp to play for SJC. You son should be fine to make the SJC Freshman and JV teams. |
| Boys who wish SJC would prioritize the soccer program and invest in quality training and coaching. For this reason, we would not choose SJC again. |
| They will take people who can help them win games. |
Screen shot please. Because you are full of sh*t. |
| We've known several players at St. John varsity boys soccer. They were on ECNL club teams. |
If your kid isn’t on Bethesda’s MLSnext team by now, he’s likely not going anywhere anyway. And SJC isn’t a powerhouse to begin with. Hopefully he’s able to get in on academics alone. |
| You do not need to play for Achilles to play for SJC (very few of the SJC players play club for Achilles; I think four, maybe five total on Varsity and freshman/JV last year). That being said, I understand Bethesda is one of the MLSNext clubs that does not allow its players to play HS soccer, even if they are able to get the documentation for a waiver (though it sounds like this player is not on MLSNext for Bethesda). |
Powerhouse in which category? |
Yes and no to the above -- You don't need to play for Achilles to make the SJC soccer teams, BUT many of the SJC players do play for Achilles. The PP underestimates the numbers -- approx. nine Achilles players played SJC varsity last fall (and all but a couple played simultaneously on Achilles MLS Next teams). And at least another 10 Achilles players played on the JV or Freshman teams. The Achilles players definitely receive preferential playing time on the SJC teams -- last fall the Freshman and Varsity SJC teams were coached by Achilles coaches. But, for the second year in a row, the JV team was coached by an SJC teacher. No word yet on who will be the coach for the SJC Freshman team for Fall 2025. That being said, your son should absolutely stay with his Bethesda travel team. And if he should make the Bethesda MLS Next team, then just pass on playing for SJC. |
Well said. |
| There are 60+ kids who try out freshman year. Some go to JV and very few, very few, varsity. There is a 80% chance your club kid will make Freshman and 40% chance JV. After that good luck. If HS soccer is his dream, try another school. And yes, Achilles kids always make it. The have a few good coaches and a few that are the opposite of good. |
| 50% of the kids who try out make it. |
Most kids want to play on a team at St John's but the reality is that most kids wont because it is recruited and competitive in most sports including soccer. |
