We’ve never been mainly because it is so far and we don’t usually have long enough at that time of year.
3 kids, middle school and high school age. We hate planning vacations? How should we best arrange this trip? All inclusive? Cruise? Tour? 1 week in Hawaii and some time beforehand in California or 2 weeks in Hawaii. We don’t feel compelled to spend a lot but a flexible $20-$25k per week would be within budget. |

You'll love this family from North Carolina I just met, the Ratliff's. Salt of the earth, similar frugal lifestyle. |
This is my trip report. I planned it myself with family.

Do the whole thing in Hawaii. Don’t do a cruise. I recommend doing two islands. I’d choose from: Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island depending what you want to do. |
Good luck affording a vacation in 6 months! You dream big. |
Okay drama llama. Take it over to Politics or Money & Finance. |
If your the all inclusive type just go to the Caribbean |
Definitely Hawaii. I’d do Kauai and another island or some time in CA. Kauai is generally a little less expensive lodging wise. We had a 4 BR Airbnb for about $9k for the week last summer.

If $40K to $50K is "within budget" for a TWO week vacation you should just hire a travel planner that knows Hawaii well. |
Op here. Do you have one that you’d recommend? |
It really depends on what you want to do. I'd definitely NOT do a cruise or stay at one resort the whole time.
Kauai is great for hiking. If you are going during whale season and specifically want to see whales Maui is particularly good for that. Oahu for military history, beaches, great hikes, and any more city activities like shopping. Big Island has absolutely amazing swimming and hiking, Volcano National Park, Mauna Kea, etc. So basically: what's your goal here? Luxury resort? Snorkeling? Surfing? Hiking? Whale watching? Lava? How physically active is your family and how well can everyone swim? |
We did this last Christmas and will probably do it again. We stayed at the Marriott in Waikiki for a few days. We stayed with friends near the Dole Plantation for a few days. We spent the second week in Maui at an Air B&B.
Rent a car but you can do day rentals. Tons of information online. Decide if you want a resort or want to be in a hotel. Look at different Islands. We spent a few days in SF first which made the time change easier with kids. It was busy but not crazy. |
