DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| My daughter's back to school night is tonight. I am wondering what to expect? What exactly is back to school night? |
| Ours is next week and I've never been but my understanding is it's more of an informational session for parents. So, no kids. |
| I had never attended one until going for my stepchild's BTSN in junior high, so I don't have tons of experience dating back to the younger grades. Each teacher was in their own classroom. These weren't 1-on-1 sessions. It was more to hear their general overview of the class, expectations, whether parents should be on the lookout for homework. It was a chance to see the rooms your child will be in every day, to put a face with the name of the teacher. We chatted briefly with teachers and introduced ourselves, but it wasn't a time to say "Well, Johnny is such-and-such...." |

What grade is your daughter in OP?
What 12:55 describes is how it's been for my DC who's now in high school. You meet your child's teacher(s), hear what they'll be doing, discuss expectations for homework and discipline, etc. |
My daughter is in PK. |
| At our school, even at the PS and younger levels, its pretty similar to what was described above. At our private school, first you have a big meeting in auditorium where the Heads talks and introduces all the teachers. Then they have someone come up and ask for money. Then you go to your classroom and the teachers talk about stuff they are doing, teaching methods, etc. They go over protocols, etc. Then the room mom gets up and talks about signing up for field trips and parties and stuff. |
| OP -- Thank you for the information! My husband has to work late --the school is providing child care for school age children tonight, but I am having a hard time finding a sitter for my two year old. I guess I am trying to figure out if I will miss out if I don't attend - or will it be obnoxious to bring my two year old. |
At my DD's preschool, children were asked not to come, but we were told that if there was a childcare emergency, they would rather we come and bring the kids than not come at all. It really depends on your child though. Would you get anything out of going if you were distracted by DC the whole time? |
| At my school, the people doing the child care took my 2 year old too. The "child care" was essentially watching cartoons, so the 2 year old just hung out with them. Not the best situtation, but they were pretty flexible. |

At our Title I school, it is precisely the way the poster at 13:17 described, with the exception of the room mom at the end.
There were a lot of children last year (when my child was in PreK). It is distracting, but many people don't have many options. This year we arranged for a babysitter. |
| At Thomson this year we had child care arranged by one of teachers with the help of some previously graduated 7th and 8th graders. Otherwise we would have hundreds of kids, parents really don't have options, myself included. It helped a lot. |
