Affection, unconditional love, adorable to look at, calming to pet. Some people like the exercise they get with a dog - running, walking, hiking.

People have enjoyed having pets for generations. If you don’t get it you don’t get it and if you have to ask, you don’t get it.

With enough attention and training, a dog usually becomes very attached and attentive to his owner. It is a very rewarding and affectionate relationship. However, until the relationship is well established, the dog is a lot of work and training.

You'll never know. And you don't need to. Those of us who have dogs, have never questioned "the point."

It's okay for you to not like dogs. Some people like them, some don't. Some people like cats or fish, some don't.

Love, companionship and oxytocin. When they stare at you in the eyes you get some good hormones that help with depression.

PP. Of course they have for generations. Is the point of having one still the same as say for your great great grandparents generation?

Ok. Sorry you don't have another human to get that from.

It's different. Having a kid is different from having a spouse is different from having a per is different from having a best friend. They are different relationships, but all fulfilling.

As PP said, you don’t have to understand why people want dogs as pets. You clearly don’t and that’s fine.

Weird question. I grew up with dogs -- always giant, lovable, insanely shedding goofballs -- and while I don't want to own a dog again, now or ever, I get why people love them.

I've converted to cats, and I totally get why lots of people can't stand them.

Dogs are beautiful and rewarding, but puppies are stupid and messy. If you are trying to train a puppy, I totally get why you feel this way. Dogs don't really come into their own until they are at least a year old, sometimes older. Once they are trained to the point where you can trust them and don't have to worry every second about them, they are fantastic companions.

Is it because it is cheaper than getting a home security system? Plus the bonuses other posters listed.
