Tipping the valet parker

Hi there,
We are spending the night in a hotel in DC soon. What are we tipping the valet guy these days? I haven't parked in a city in ages. Are we still at $5.00? Or will I be hemorrhaging $20s that weekend?

Depends on the place, the quality of parking spot you want, the care you want of your vehicle, and the valet's expectations.

Better tipping big on dropoff, so they put it in a nicer spot if able.
When you leave, your car isn't in their possession anymore so who cares really then.
Most valets will think if you tip small on drop off, that you might not tip at all on pick up, and get their revenge in advance on you.
