Canvas

Whose strategic priority is fixing or getting rid of Canvas? It constantly losing and moving classes. You have to be signed into Canvas Student and even then have to be using it on a PC (not phone or tablet). Links to documents don’t open without you first logging into ParentVue and Then navigating to Canvas and even then it’s a crapshoot. Like what Product Manager and Communications person signed off on this chaos.

This is perhaps the 100th post about that Canvas. MCPs are you reading and hearing this. A Tech disaster. Some HS students could probably come up with something better, only if they had more time in their schedule.

DP, not OP.

This sounds like a you problem.

Kids have school issued chromebooks and no problems accessing Canvas.

No one cares. It's Ed tech. Someone wined and fined and signed a contract and it's done.

You should go to school with your kids and learn to read for comprehension.

I also like that you unwittingly told everyone you are so unengaged with your kids' education that you don't even know how unengaged you are. IYKYK.

Thank you! I've also never had any of these issues with Canvas. It is what most colleges use around here and I think it's great students will already be familiar with it. It's easy to use as a teacher, and believe most people who do have issues lack training to use it or weren't tech savvy to begin with. I have no interest in the county investing in yet another learning management system. I already had to do the switch from Google Classroom and have too many resources on Canvas to lose.

My kid now goes to a very well regarded private college and they also use canvas. She reports that they have it set up better than McPS. She is a techie and could probably give a detailed 10 page report on what McPs is doing wrong.

From my perspective it’s not terrible but it doesn’t communicate with synergy which causes a lot of problems. It’s two different companies and maybe it’s not possible to program a patch/bridge but that would be really helpful. I really like the calendar system in canvas. Some teachers don’t enter assignments on it thoug, which makes it less useful. Once a year or so, it randomly deletes everything for me but then it goes back up, and generally seems to work okay.

Maybe with the supposed glut of CS grads some of them will now be willing to work for Ed tech companies instead of looking for the big bucks at Google and Meta.

Umm I’m the original poster and work in Tech so know how terrible a parent experience this is. Yes it works for the students because they are only access Canvas. However parents have a mishmash of things. They have to be signed into ParentVue in order to see Canvas. Or signed into the StudentVue Canvas app. Even if that is true, that can’t readily see an assignment because it may have been imported or actually in Google classroom or somewhere else. The class tiles are assigned by student. For some unknown reason one of my kids tiles has just disappeared. Meanwhile classes that my kids have not been in for years are present.

Anyone who tells you that MCPS has setup good connectivity between all this disparate applications clearly has never worked with good Enterprise setup.

14:06 Yep there are enough of us who know it's crap. Maybe this is mcps' goal to make it difficult for parents

Canvas is fine. It is not crap. Many school systems use it along with many colleges and universities. MCPS may have made a mess trying to bridge Synergy with Canvas but I doubt that the main issues we are seeing is the fault of Canvas. I don’t think the MCPS tech people are very good

Yes, this is the real issue.

MCPS also dismantled some Canvas features. Which I find annoying as a teacher.
