Custody Order and Camp Registration Conflict

Anonymous
My custody order was written by a judge and it was unfortunately poorly written. The non-custodial parent has to choose two weeks of summer vacation by a certain deadline, but that deadline is way past the summer camp registration date. If I don’t register the kids within the next week, they lose their spot, but their dad is refusing to choose his weeks until the last day possible. Is there anything that can be done? This is the second time he has done this, so I expect it will be a yearly occurrence.

No there’s nothing you can do. I’m sorry - it really sucks.

Can you register for camps that have a more favorable refund policy?

Inform your ex of the date, then state you’ll be making the decision.

Assume compliance. Keep receipts and play the long game…which is just to act in you and your kids’ best interest.

If he makes noise, then deal with it. But protect your peace.

You got the order you demanded
You didn’t play nice didn’t you?

A judge wrote your Order. You played hard ball

You made your bed …

What happens if he waits until the last minute? Is this an issue of the kids don’t get the most amazing camps or an issue of the kids get no camps and custodial parent has to arrange other childcare? For the former, so what. You have childcare and your kids will have fun. For the latter, well that’s a problem.

Just let him know in writing that the week of camp your child will be unavailable but he can pick any other two weeks out of the rest of the summer? Seems very simple. Am I missing something?

How old are your kids? If they are young and this will continue on for years, it may be worth speaking to your attorney about how much it would cost you to get the order changed.

Why did the court issue an for your “order”? usually lawyers write the order and give it to the judge - were you low resource/ lawyer free so that didn’t happen?

I am confused why a judge was involved at all. Say more

If you work it out in an agreement - you can write it any way you want and even add flexibility terms

u can consent to modify the court order and give each other an earlier date

it’s not hard

I also have 4 weeks in the summer
Why do you only have 2? what happened in court ?

Just offer something to him and he’ll be nice

She didn’t have an attorney because otherwise she would have written in or negotiated a better date

What state?

Most people mod on their own bc it gets expensive

"I'm planning to register the kids for camp the weeks of XX through XY, unless you tell me that other dates would be better. If you end up choosing those dates for your weeks, and they are already registered, you can choose whether to send them on your time or explain to them why you need to cancel their camp."
