Thoughts on Wood Acres?

Anonymous
We are considering pulling our 2 kids out of private and putting them at Wood Acres due to finanical issues. I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and can speak to their experiences. I'd also be happy to hear thoughts on the pros and cons of Wood Acres. I have toured the school twice, and it seemed nice, it's just hard to know what you're getting at private and then go public. But not sure we can keep the tuition up...

This is our neighborhood elementary (when ours are old enough) and we know one or two families who have children there already.

I understand its a big school and I think it has a 5 rating (and blue ribbon?) and have only heard good things about it, in terms of teaching and general morale, that apart from one or two children finding the size of the student population a little intimidating.

Carderock Springs is from what I see the only Bethesda public Blue Ribbon elementary school. Pyle MS won in 2006.

I have friends who are happy at Wood Acres and others who are not. I think it's all in what you expect. It seems to be a very friendly neighborhood school with very involved families. It is big though and that works for some and not for others. Academically, all the schools in the general area are good because the parents around here demand it. I think coming from private (especially if it's a smaller one)you'd notice a change in how the school is run and what exactly you as a parent can and can't do. You will now be part of the county system and as such, just a cog in the wheel so to speak.

OP here. Thanks to all those who have responded. Can the PP elaborate on what it means to be a blue ribbon school? Thanks

Not a PP, but I heard from a Bannockburn family that they received a notice that there may be some redistricting that may send some WA kids over there in a few years. Not sure what neighborhoods this would be, though, and doesn't sound like it's a done deal anyway.

I have heard about the possibility of redistricting as well. Does any one have any idea when/if that would actually happen?

Blue ribbon is an award for excellence.

Life would be excellent if they'd take back the Washington Waldorf which used to be a public school. Make that Brookmont ES again and bring some relief to Wood Acres and Bannockburn!

I just can't imagine how overwhelming it would be to have 130 kids on the playground at the same time. The school is just so so full.
