You could think of renting a violin rather than buying -- in case your child's interest dissipates after 3 days. If you can't afford lessons, perhaps see if there is a book or DVD out there that you can use to help him learn. If he shows persistence then maybe you can ask around. The only one I know is the Levine School of Music. They have scholarships I think.
