Day trips from Milan?

Staying with a friend who lives in Milan for three days in April. What are some good day trips?
Was thinking Venice but not that interested in spending a whole day there, especially with the crowds. Verona seems cool, or maybe venturing to Lugano as I have never been to Switzerland. Or of course there is Lake Como |

| Lake Como -- Varenna (1 hour on the train line), from there Bellagio is a short boat ride away. Venice is too far and deserves more than a day. Maybe Verona, Bologna, Genoa, or Lugano, Switzerland? |
