Dealing with Sixt and downgraded rental car?

Anonymous
Rented a car with Sixt. They did not have the specific class of car I rented and told me they could put me in a car that was definitely a step down (i.e. think big 3 row SUV and they put you in a compact crossover). I didn't care much until they told me they could not lower the rental price to match the lower class of car. With a 1 year old in tow I was not exactly in a position to argue or make a scene, the rep just repeated "the computer won't let me change it".

We got the car called Sixt customer service who told me to call back when the rental is finalized as they can't make changes to an active rental. Took a screenshot but looking at their website, the car I received can be rented right now for the same dates for 1/3 of the price as what I paid.

Has anyone dealt with this?

I don’t know what Sixt is, but maybe just use a regular car rental place next time?

Sixt is usually awesome and much better than other car companies. Call their customer service. I’ve never had this happen and I use them a lot.

I’ve never had that happen with Sixt. In the few times they didn’t have my class of car they upgraded me for free. I’ve never heard of a rental agency charging you the same rate for a lesser class.

Next time just cancel and rebook on the spot. Most car rentals are free cancellation unless you prepay which I never recommend.

Can your credit card company help you contest the charge?

Don’t rent with Sixt.

I had a problem with a Sixt car last fall -- fuel tank was empty, which we realized approximately 5 miles from the airport. It took some time to get through and get the problem solved, but customer service did sort it out and we were reimbursed for the extra tank of gas we had to buy. I'd start there -- good luck!

We had this with Sixt as well. Had to argue for a better car for close to an hour.

Then it happened again this past February but with Hertz. Also argued for over an hour and finally ended up with something not nearly as good but at least big enough we could fit with all our gear.

The advice to not prepay is good.

Np Yes, we’ve done that.

We had a bad experience with sixt in EU / don’t use them anymore.

Sixt charged us for damage to a rental car we did not do. We had photos of the problem that we took at pick-up. All materials came to us via mail (from Europe) rather than through our online account (handled by a different aspect of Sixt - not the rental side) - arrived later than the dispute and/or pay fine date. Emails, photos, got our credit card involved. It was a huge time sink and frustrating. Obviously, they needed someone to pay for the damages and figured we were an easy target. Eventually got it dropped but I will not rent from them again.

I used to travel in France frequently and learned to never use Sixt. I don’t think you will ever get a resolution, unfortunately. They are the worst rental car company. Amazed they are still in business.

I had the same issue with Avis. I rented a 7-passenger Suburban/Yukon. They were all out and gave me a Chrysler Pacifica.

They did not lower the price to match the class of car I was given. The customer service person was actually raised their voice and was arguing with me on the phone. All this even though the final bill clearly said I reserved a car in class L and the car they rented me was a V.

Sixt is horrible and predatory - avoid at all costs!
