I'd like to bring a gift to the daughter of a business colleague in New Delhi next week. He has a 6 yr old daughter--I have 2 boys, so I"m not really up on the latest craze for girls. Can anyone suggest something that it also relatively small/light to bring as a gift?
Thanks. |

I guess I should have added that the "in India" part is relevant in that I'm hoping for some ideas on things that may not be as readily available there? Typically American?

I'm expecting so not sure what six year olds like, and I also never really noticed what sorts of children's things are available in India, but I'm Indian and have been several times so I'll take a stab at this.
There are plenty of bookstores with English books but I know my cousins always read British stuff, like PG Wodehouse and stuff. Not sure they carry a lot of American classics. Maybe take her a few Ramona/Beezus paperbacks? Those are lightweight. They have plenty of American style dresses (frocks) and jeans and clothes and all that. But maybe not the latest in American toys, like, I don't know, whatever is today's equivalent of a Cabbage Patch kid. I think they have Barbies but not sure. I think American versions or American styles of things would go over well, like maybe a classic American tin lunchbox or fun school supplies (pencil cases, erasers, etc.) But really, you'd be surprised: They really have everything over there. |
| My friends' nieces who live in India love getting American chocolates. The oldest is about 6 I think. |
Thank you for your help. I'm sorry, I probably didn't make it very clear in my post. I go to India about 6 times per year, and used to live there. I'm pretty familiar with India--what I'm not familiar with is 6 yr old girls. You're right, a lot is available, but many things are totally out of reach for the average Indian (price-wise) if they are imported. And yes, Barbie is there, complete with sari and bindi!
The lunch box and school supplies are a great idea, though! |
| I always bring Disney stuff to my niece and she loves it. Also boardgames like Scrabble, Yahtzee and such. |
| How about a snow globe with a DC monument inside? (Just pack it securely in your check-in baggage.) |
| Go to Michaels and fill a box with art supplies. Different kinds of papers, markers, crayons, stickers, glitter glue, scissors with different edges, glue sticks, etc. Major hit with my girls and every one of her friends that age. |

US style candy!
That is usually a hit with kids Only current big craze I can think of is sillybandz, and that craze is fading |

silly bandz are just fun if you have someone to trade it with what's not the case if you take it all the way to India.
also the idea to take art supplies with you won't work either... too bulky, too heavy and nothing different from what they get there. |
| A Pillow pet |
they wrap stuffed animals in plastic bags to keep them from getting dusty. WASTE OF MONEY! |
| I would go to a cool toys store like Tugooh Toys & Yiro or Child's Play (even better) and ask sales people what is popular among 6 year old girls. I love Child's Play in Rockville. Employees there are super helpful. Good luck! |
| I second the small craft stuff and while there pick up some flocked bears (little tiny ones) of different colors. I don't know why, but my d and her friends are obsessed with them- they make them little pieces of furniture and hats etc.and they're a dollar for a bag of three. |
