Moving within DC after preK3 lottery

Anonymous
Hi there,

We currently live in Brookland but are looking to move to upper NW. We don’t have a timeline because we want to find the right house. Our daughter will start preK3 in the fall. Lottery list is due soon and originally we were going to rank all Brookland schools and IB but are now worried if we find a house in NW about a horrific commute to school everyday. Is it possible to change schools after the lottery? How does that work? Or would we just have to suffer with a long commute until preK4? Wondering if we should rank schools in upper NW in case.

What schools are you looking at? Most of upper NW doesn't even have PK3. Maybe try for some of the CBOs that way? Though be aware that CBO funding is still up in the air for this coming school year.

Yes you can change schools after the lottery, but you have to waitlist in. Frankly your chances are bleak for anything remotely convenient to upper NW. I would make other plans.

Maybe try some Ward 1 and 4 schools? Maybe Raymond? You have 12 slots so maybe worth to put it and a few other ones that might be more likely on the list.

Military Road school is kind of in between and since it's pk only and has no boundary your odds are decent. I know people who are happy there.

Try to find schools whose commute will work for both places.

Besides the 'in between' schools already mentioned, maybe check out Dorothy Height (liked this school a lot when we toured for PK, and now they're in a beautiful new building too) or Powell.
