Looking for families who may have accepted a Banneker offer after completing 5-8th at BASIS. Is the rigor and workload about the same? What are some pros and cons?
I don't want to hear from the usual BASIS bashers. We've been happy so far and I am not blind to its imperfections. Just wondering if the move would make sense. Child prefers Walls, but bracing ourselves to the lottery gods. |
No one has gone from BASIS DC to Banneker for 9th grade in at least 5 years, if ever. |
I would reach out to Banneker to find out what level of math your kid will be placed in. That might end up being a deal breaker. |
Banneker told us that students will take a math test and then will be placed in the appropriate class. |
PP again and thanks. I would be careful switching my kid- Walls used to do the same thing and kids from Basis who would be in precalculus or calculus as freshmen if they stayed at Basis had to go back to Geometry or even Algebra I. Just a caution! |
Our kid is at BASIS for middle and I actually can't imagine choosing Banneker over BASIS, though Walls or private would be appealing. The cons seem similar (strict and lots of homework) but the upsides of BASIS don't seem to exist at Banneker (BASIS seem to have harder classes and more Ivy admits and a handful of NMSF vs none at Banneker, so presumably a higher top level student.) |
I think one kid did last year (parent of current 9th grader at Basis.) Pretty sure there was one who went there after 8th. |
Given how small of a school basis is - isn’t 1 a significant number? |
Basis to Banneker makes sense for a kid who knows math/CS/engineering is not their jam. I could also envision Black and Brown kids preferring Banneker for HS. We turned down a spot in 5th grade at Basis and I knew even then that my kid would likely prefer Banneker for HS. Ultimately, she did and currently attends. |
Agree, there was one last year. But it is rare, OP, so you are not going to get many (or any, unless that one person is on this thread) first-hand experiences here. More go to Walls or private. For Banneker you will have to rely on talking to current students there, without much reference to the transition from Basis. |
+1. |
But if that one family doesn’t come on this forum then you won’t get any info. And if I were them I wouldn’t respond because it’s so identifiable. And no I don’t think 2 in the last 5 years is a significant number. |
Pretty sure there's at least one in 12th grade, as well. |
Nope. DC publishes this data. You are wrong. |
DP from those previously. I don't know how to convince you but yes one kid went to Banneker this year from BASIS. OP, maybe see if Banneker will reach out to the family for you and connect you. |
