ISO Senior/independent living options in or near Bethesda

Anonymous
I am looking into relocating my parents (in their 80s) to an independent living facility near me. Can anyone recommend a place that's in or near Bethesda that doesn't require a buy-in and is in the $6-7K/month price range. They can still get around and do things for themselves, but an available graduated level of care to assisted living would probably be a good option so I don't have to move them twice. They are adamant about not wanting to live anywhere that feels like a nursing home. Thanks in advance or any recs or advice!

Your monthly figure is likely way below area DC prices. Perhapsyou would do better to find a closeby apartment and to talk to agencies to see what the best deal on support services might be. Also look for an apartment that would be walkable or a short drive with parking to a library, Senior or community center, fitness or Y center., church. - whatever might fill their hours and help them to meet others. Check to see if there are senior transit services or if you could help them learn to use Uber.
You might check with the local offices on aging for suggestions in best central points for seniors to live. Traffic and ability to drive in it are two key factors. We are in age range of your folks so I know of what I speak.

What about the new place going up where the Palisades safeway was? It looks like ti is getting close to done. Not sure what the financial terms are there.

If they are Jewish (although they don't have to be, but they will be stuck with kosher food), Ring House in Rockville is in that price range and is a rental arrangement.

no such thing. You need to look at the burbs for this price range.

You need to look further out, and you need to be prepared for the resemblance to a nursing home/midlevel hotel. That's what they look like.

Not sure of the cost, but Charles E Smith Life Communities is in that area.

6-7k for two people?

My one parent costs around $10-11K now.

The base price might be 7K but they charge for every single thing they help. Showers cost money. Applying bandages costs money. Medication is charged by how many medications are distributed.

They also charge if they have to remind your parent to use the bathroom.

Just think of every little thing. There's a charge.

Also, they get around one roll of toilet paper per week. For $11,000!!

These prices do not include Depends adult diapers or bed pads.

OP here. Can you tell me the facility where your parent is? I understand the additional costs for assisted living. They do not need any assistance right now so would be going into Independent Living, although I imagine within a few years they might need AL so I'd like to find a place that has both.

With a mother in a memory care unit and a father in law in the highest level of care in assisted living, I recommend exploring non-profit entities. They aren't perfect and they generally aren't as fancy as the chains owned by PE, but the prices are a fraction lower and most importantly, they have different fee structures and many of them will not kick your family member out if they run out of money because they have endowments. There are very significant caveats to this, most importantly being able to "pass" the means test upon entrance - they honestly aren't likely to let you in if you are 78 and only have enough funds for 2 years of living there. But if you are e.g., 78 and have funds to pay for 10 years, but end up living for 15, they won't kick you out. Not all not for profits have this set up, but my mother's does.

Ring House feels “old”

For no buy in you are looking at a dump. They are more like $9-$11k. If you don’t mind Virginia vitality living is cheap but the people are old or maybe the Virginian.

If you need those things you should be in assisted living or just kill me.
